PROJECT SPACES
Curated by Olympia Tzortzi
When we analyze the cultural life of a city/country, we find that contemporary art and its various areas of presentation are an essential part of it. Having myself founded Callirrhoë, a hybrid model between exhibition space and art association, and having participated in the section of independent spaces at Art Athina 2022, the invitation to curate these spaces for Art Athina 2023 is of particular importance to me.

By considering these initiatives as places whose main objective is to create alternative models for exhibitions and the management of exhibition spaces based on flexibility and multitasking, I have tried to develop a scheme that goes beyond the narrow traditional boundaries of the form that independent exhibition spaces for contemporary art should have today. To achieve this goal, a preliminary core of the following exhibition venues was created in alphabetical order: Alkinois, igni office, koraï space, MISC, OMS (One Minute Space), sealed earth, space52 and Thermia Project.

Some spaces serve primarily for academic research, others as residencies for artists or exhibitions by other curators, some as laboratories, and some as early galleries. These initiatives do not contradict the traditional exhibition model, but frame it and work in parallel with it, making the art environment somewhat more complex, but at the same time richer.

The common denominator among all participants is the priority of opening a channel of discussion between art and society, and possibly commerce, without restricting social groups.

TALKS
Curated by Danai Giannoglou
As the landscape of visual arts is constantly evolving and changing, in this year's edition of Art Athina we invite speakers and audience to participate in discussions that address issues that directly affect the domestic Greek scene, turning them into an international and open dialog.

Starting from the increasingly topical debate about the hospitality industry and the way contemporary art is becoming an integral part of the hotel experience that directly affects the market, we turn to publishing and editions themselves as visual objects, as fields of fermentation and as archival environments. We examine the leading role that residency programs for artists have played in shaping the Athens art scene and discuss the institutional framework of new commissions for artists through the relationships they create between artists, institutions, and collections.
The Art Athina Talks program covers a wide range of concerns and approaches, creating space for mediation, exchange, fermentation and “verbal” exchange of views. Through current issues that affect the field of culture and visual arts in particular, but also through discussions on fundamental topics that are always worth addressing, such exchanges, fermentations and mediations bring us to imagine and learn with and from each other.
Danai Giannoglou (b. 1992 in Athens, Greece)

Between 2020 and 2022 she held the position of Assistant Curator at de Appel in Amsterdam and previous to that she was the Exhibitions Archive Coordinator at the Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art in Athens. She has contributed texts to catalogues, artist’s books and magazines, edited publications and curated exhibitions and programmes for various institutions and organizations in Greece and abroad (Piet Zwart Institute, The Breeder, B&M Theocharakis Foundation,Hotel Maria Kapel, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, de Appel, Enterprise Projects, Galerie Michel Journiac).

VIDEO
Akis Kokkinos, Curator and DEO projects founder
I miss you more than I remember you I miss you more than I remember you is a screen-based programme presented in an outdoor cinema setting at the Zappeion Gardens. The programme invites artists from Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Lebanon to present moving-image works, documentary and fictional films, all of which explore the complex relationships between land, vulnerable communities, and the official history making of the south-eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Projected on a large-scale inflatable screen, the programme will serve as a temporal public monument questioning the authoritarian role of the public sphere and the narratives that it constructs while amplifying voices, stories and experiences of overlooked, dislocated bodies. In light of the current turbulent era marked by the resurgence of far-right movements in the Greek parliament, the devastating refugee shipwreck, and tragic earthquakes in Turkey and Syria earlier this year, I miss you more than I remember
you engages with current geopolitical anxieties, conflicted historical imaginations, petrified memories, and suggests alternative forms of solidarity, kinship, and intimacies across cultures and borders.

Presenting the programme in the context of art-athina, the most renowned Greek art fair, while facing Zappeion palatial premises, it proposes a new lexicon for cultural value, hierarchies and permanence and allows the viewers to introspect, question, and discover new dimensions of shared humanity.

The title of the programme derives from the profound words of Ocean Vuong, a prominent poet who eloquently captures the essence of individuals navigating between disparate worlds and aims to facilitate a profound process of healing and mutual support. Vuong embraces the distinctiveness of each person's identity while encouraging a collective journey towards understanding and empathy.

PERFORMANCE
Live Encounters: Contemporary artistic performative practices
In 2023, the performance art program will continue its dynamic presence at Art Athina, and return to the physical space of the exhibition. The project, entitled Live Encounters: Contemporary Artistic Performative Practices, will present a series of actions carried out by key representatives of this art form and the galleries with which they collaborate. In this context, the different directions and dialog with other means will be explored, as well as the relationship with materiality and digital space. The program encourages the development of new directions in performance art by reconsidering historical references and the multiple ways in which this art form is constantly reshaped.

Using the body as the primary artistic material, the13works presented refer to: the process of objectification and subject formation, social relations, the economy, political claims and the relationship to the personal, the creation and dissolution of identities. Performance art becomes a tool for investigating power relations, a form of memory transmission, and ultimately a different approach to understanding the world.
The program explores the multiple aspects of performance art and the references of this art form, while tracing its development in the Greek context, its relationship to theatrical actions, choreography, sound practices, social activism and performing arts, and introducing representatives of this artistic genre who interact with different artistic fields. The aim is not to differentiate the artistic vocabulary of performance, but rather to capture the creative up heavals and connections it generates beyond its predetermined boundaries. The relationship of contemporary artists to politics, historical documentation, and social participations explored in a time frame where embodied presence is increasingly important.

KIDS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
The esteemed cultural organization “KROMA” continues in 2023 its highly successful collaboration with Art Athina, proudly presenting the groundbreaking educational program titled "We Are The Rainbow"

Throughout history, the rainbow has stood as a powerful symbol of unity and diversity. The mesmerizing interplay of various hues within this singular phenomenon serves as a poignant reminder of the vast tapestry of human experience, crafting a collective aesthetic realm that gracefully transcends cultural and identity barriers.

Within this vivid and luminous prism, this year's event anticipates an even more dynamic and inspiring showcase, expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. It will provide a platform for both young and mature "artists" to delve into their creative reservoirs, embarking on a journey of self-discovery while embracing their individuality.

The essence of the "We Are The Rainbow" initiative revolves around the symbiotic relationship between participants and art. A captivating interactive art project, in a constant state of metamorphosis, will draw inspiration from the concealed rainbow hues enfolded within our urban landscape. This project extends an open invitation to visitors of Art Athina, encouraging them to contribute their unique "brushstrokes" and personal viewpoints. Complementing this immersive experience, an array of workshops has been meticulously curated to empower children, providing them with the tools to nurture their imaginative prowess and artistic fluency through an assortment of techniques and materials.

The heart of the "We Are The Rainbow" program resides in its educational art workshops, seamlessly woven into the fabric of the exhibition. These workshops, masterfully led by seasoned artists, educators, art historians, and art therapists, are driven by an unwavering passion and dedication. Their purpose is to guide children through an enriching journey of self-expression, catalyzed by art, creating an environment that is both dynamic and secure, stimulating children to unearth fresh facets of their inner selves.

As a globally recognized non-profit entity, KROMA remains committed in its mission to showcase Greek culture on an international stage, while shedding light on societal issues through the powerful medium of art. Through "We Are The Rainbow," KROMA aims to inspire the young artists of the next generation to face challenges, express themselves, and create, thereby fostering a dynamic and innovative environment that reflects the richness of art and culture.
We are the Rainbow
The cultural organization KROMA continues its successful collaboration with the leading art festival Art Athina in 2023 with a brand-neweducational program for children and young people. Inspired by the rainbow and the concepts of hope, beauty and inclusion, symbolized not only by the colorful arch but also by the children themselves, the 2023 educational program will take place under the title "We are the Rainbow" on September 16 and 17, 2023 at the Zappeion Mansion.

Seventeen workshops and eleven instructors await the young friends of the exhibition to explore together the magical world of art, with the aim of discovering and expressing their own artistic selves, in addition to acquiring knowledge. Curated by visual artists, educators, art historians, etc., the program’s workshops are designed to approach each thematic category in a different way and contribute to the children’s holistic development.

Sections cover a wide range of different art forms, including collage, painting, sculpture, architecture, the ater games, street art, paper cutting, and more, where participants express themselves, interact with key artists, and have fun creating.

The goal of t e educational program is to provide a safe and free space for children to act out their thoughts and explore the world around the minways that cannot always be expressed with words alone. In this environment, they exchange ideas, strengthen their self-confidence and social skills, express themselves in a variety of ways, and become sensitive to social issues.

As part of the educational program and during the workshops, there are free activities for all children without restriction:
1. An interactive installation where everyone has the opportunity to make artistic interventions and create a collective work of art that constantly changes its form.
2. A well-equipped space for the free creative expression of children.
